Faulty discs?

MessageAuthor

I got some genuine Volvo front discs for my T5. When I took the first one out of the box I noticed that it had what is best described as a shave edge. A section of the outer edge was flat for a length of about 2 inches. When I measured the diameter at this point it equated to a 3-4 mm reduction. I looked at the other new disc and that had a similar shaved edge, but not so severe, only about 3/4 inch. The discs were otherwise finished properly and the shaved bits had received the coating that the rest of the vented area gets. Surely these are faulty? I couldn't get hold of any Volvo dealers to query it.

The 'shaved' areas on the discs you describe are normal and is where some of the metal has been removed during the balancing process. Paul.

Well I never knew that. I've never seen a disc that's been shaved before. Is this a new idea?

Discs have been balanced for years, but different manufacturers have different methods. These days the weights have been diched in favour of shaving.
