Won't go over 2000rpm 1977 244DL

MessageAuthor

Hi, The vehicle is a 1977 244DL, B21E injection engine The car was driving beautifully at first, never missed a beat then as it got warmer it slowly started losing power, now it's got to the point where it won't go above 2000rpm, I put it in neutral then I used just a bit of throttle it went to 2500rpm, then if I try to increase it just goes back to 2000rpm I left it for a while then tried again, same thing Thank you

not sure if this applies to your engine as it's an early version.try changing the rotor arm.they can have a rev limiting function that springs in about 6000 rpm . mine failed a few months ago giving me the same problem.new rotor arm cured it.

I would firstly look at whether the throttle is actually opening the full 90 degrees. With the engine off get someone to floor the throttle while you look at the actual throttle link rod. If it throttle is not opening correctly, disconnect the kickdown cable for the autobox and test again. Disconnect link rod at throttle and check that it turns manually. Do you have new floor mats on the driver side? Check the plastic bush at the round alloy thing where the cables connect.

Another possibility is the control pressure regulator. My 264 had similar performance and that solved it. If you disconnect the wires to the control pressure regulator and it doesn't make any difference then you'll knowthta it is kapoot. Good luck.

ok, thats interesting because i remember disconnecting one of the injector looking plug things and it didnt make a difference, it was the one that is really visible right in front of you on the manifold, although it might have been for the warm up regulator or something like that that doesnt affect the normal running of the car, i have asked a few people and they have mentioned things like the fuel filter and the fuel distributor, not sure what to try first???????????

My car would hit the limiter at 3.5k so i put a new rotor arm on and solved the problem when driving the car does it feel as your hitting the limiter at 2k. pete

That was probably the cold start injector. Rotor arm is a good start after which fuel pressure and control pressure regulator need visiting. Regards Peter

The control pressure regulator doesn't look like 'injector looking plug things'. It affects both cold starting and pressure under load. As far as I know, if your car starts, the cold start injector works. Does the car have adequate power to move when it is cold. Even if the revs get to 2000 will it move the car when cold or not?
