wiper blade noise ahhhhhhhhhh

MessageAuthor

This is one that has been niggling me for a year or two now, the dam noisy wiper blades. I replaced them recently with brand new genuine Volvo ones including the arms but it made no difference, they thump back and forth dragging their feet as it were, screeching and scrolching, they just cant do it quietly. It happens in light showers or torrential down pours, low or high speeds, hot or cold weather. Is there a magic solution anyone, thanks.

A lot of debris can build up on the rubber, this usually never gets cleaned when one washes the car. If the wipers are fairly new they should be OK, so I would advise you to clean the wiper rubbers, thoroughly, with something like a sponge using a bit of car wash solution diluted in water, then rinse them down. If the problem still exists after the above, you may have a bent wiper arm.

Do you regularly wax your car? Sometimes you can get a build up of wax on the windscreen even if you are careful, try cleaning the windscreen with vinegar on a sponge if that doesn't work I would take the car to a main dealers and ask for advice. I had the same problem until I bought a set of wiper blades from halfords, now sorted.

For the wipers to operate correctly they have to flip over at the end of each sweep, so they are dragged across the screen behind the arms, rather than pushed in front of it. In order for this to happen the wiper arms need to be set correctly (in the plane parallel to the surface of the screen) so that the wipers aren't 'biased' in one direction and stick. Watch the wipers and if they don't 'flip' twist the arm slightly to re-align it. Also (maybe before doing the arms) ensure the wipers are anchored in the gripper bits at one end, and free to slide in the other 'guide bits' on the arm. The wipers follow the contour of the screen, which is curved, and need to straighten as they 'flip' - if they are held tightly in all the grippers they have to lift the arm quite high, as they retain the curved shape. Hope that makes sense.

If you're in OZ, you should be able to get hold of Aunger silicone blades. They come in various lengths and suit 6 & 8mm wide wiper "holders". They worked for me.

You could try and get some of the new flat blades as used on the newer Volvos. Or if the car is o be left without using the wipers for a while you could set the blades in the direction of the first sweep to stop the Bias. Normally after the last sweep the blades angle towards the bonnet. If you lift them and angle them to the roof this may help to keep the shape. My car can be left for weeks at a time and I do this and it seems to work.

Thanks for all the suggestions guys, much appreciated. I finally fitted a set of the new sleek Bosh Aero's and what a difference, they are just magic, so smooth, not a sound! It will be interesting to so how long they last. Cheers.
