Take the Mackies off your list immediatly!!! I just sold mine, and havent looked back. Since I do T.V. post my choices were the Genelecs and JBLs. Im happy to have purchased the JBL LSR6328Ps, the street on them is $1999.00 a pair, but stores have been selling them arounf $1,700.00 pair. These are NOT your fathers JBLs!!!!
Interesting...when I listened to the Mackies a few months ago, I thought they were a little loose in the bottom octave. I like nice tight bass, but I thought if they're 'industry standards', then I could try to make them work. The bass is a little "woofy" for me, though. I was VERY impressed with the LSR28Ps (predecessor to the 6328Ps) when I heard them, and they are pretty much at the top of the price range, but let's see what others have to say about their fave monitors. One concern about the JBLs is that they're considered a "mid-field" monitor and I'd be using them at about a 6-7' equilateral triangle distance. Any issues with using a mid-field in closer quarters?
I haven't heard the passive BM6s. Nobody seems to stock them - but I'll check around. The BM5's are in a lot of places, but they don't have enough bottom end below 50hz. I already have a Carver PM175 (175/ch @8ohms) for the Tannoys. Hopefully, that would be clean enough for the Dynaudios, although I saw a nice package with the BM6s and a Hafler P3000 for only $1298. They hit -3db at 43hz - not bad. Some people rave about the V8s and some don't like them - but they definitely should have been on my list. I'll give them another listen. It seems a lot of places sell them for $1000 a pair. One place even throws in a pair of Sennheiser 280s with the purchase. Hey, Mitch Gallagher (EQ Mag) uses the V8s (or he did) - I don't know if that's good or bad.
Check out the Alesis ProLinear 820DSP monitors. Very clean, and user adjustable EQ. Smooth top and bottom, with curve presets for NS10, Genelec, etc., or tune them yourself. I compared them directly with the new JBLs (2-way 8"), and the JBLs were very muddy in the low mids, and not a lot of bottom end. The Alesis are a hands-down winner, and only $1,000 a pair, and the JBLs are $1,000 each.
