Hi Newbie here.Bit of advice please. 740se.

MessageAuthor

Hi all, after searching for ages and looking at loads of 'sheds' for sale I have bought myself a very nice 740se. Totally rust free, mint interior, full volvo service history and 110,000 miles. She had a Volvo essential service at 108,000 miles and she is in fine fettle. She has a couple of running issues which I am seeking advice on. The worst is a slight misfire just off idle which mainly happens on the overrun, back off the throttle in gear and she shunts and 'chugs', hitting the throttle again the problem dissapears. She accelerates perfectly smoothly, just stumbles when I back off the throttle. The car has only done 2000 miles since 2004 and has been stood for a long time. Obviously I shall check/replace plugs, rotor, cap and leads first but I just wondered if there is anything else I should check? Idle speed is a bit erratic, never idles at the same speed twice, could this be connected to the other problem? Also the fuel pump is a bit noisy, can hear it at the rear of the car when idling, anything to worry about? The fuel gauge is a bit erratic too, spoke to the previous owner who used to almost run it out of fuel and then top up from a can.....idiot! Is there a fuel filter on these cars, if so where is it located? I would think it's probably crudded up. That's it! I have to say I'm very impressed with the well engineered feel of these cars, it's my first volvo (after having a few unreliable 'other' makes) and it seems looking at the condition of it that it will last forever. Just love the way the doors and bonnet close so easily and precisely and after 20 years on the road the underbonnet and engine areas are almost like new. I've only had the car a week and I'm already smitten. Thanks in advance for any advice received.

regarding the rough running on light throttle have a look at the microswitch on the throttle drum on top of the engine ... as the throttle comes to shut just before the stop you should hear the switch click , and as soon as you start to open the throttle it should click , adjust with a small allen key until this happens , it controls the ignition timing map .. you are getting too much advance when the throttle is shut ..

Thanks mate, I will check that this weekend, after the usual Christmas rituals have ceased. Going to give her a thorough going over and service, although it was done at volvo 2500 miles ago it was in 2004!

Just like to say a big thanks to Clan, car now sorted, the microswitch had come loose. Just tilted it slightly, nipped up the bolts and it's great now. It was ticking over at 1200rpm it's now down to an acceptable 750 and much much smoother. Cheers mate :thumbs_up:
